Dumgoyne

Just been for a quiet run up Dumgoyne (427m). Was planning to continue to Earl's Seat but first bumped into Luke Arnott and chatted for 10 minutes, and then bumped into Eddie Dealtry and chatted for a further 10 minutes, by which time I was cold and couldn't be bothered going any further so just jogged back to the distillery with Eddie who was late for his tea.

Final race of Scottish Hill Runners Championship 2005
The race was jointly won by Ronnie Gallagher and Cameron Watson. Adrian Davis came 3rd after taking a crafty shortcut to jump some places coming into the bridge at the end.
The weather was more or less atrocious throughout. Strong winds, pishing rain and low cloud. Of the hardy group of 45 runners at the start line, only 33 successfully completed the course with all checkpoints checked.
For Jill Mykura it should have been a formality to jog round the course and collect the ladies' Scottish title, but somehow Jill missed the final checkpoint in the mist.
I pottered round the course with Richie Cunningham. We both took 3:35, but Richie sneaked in front at the end taking the same crafty shortcut at the end as Adrian and missing the final gate and marshall.
More of a survival exercise in the conditions than a regular hill race.

Christophe Jaquerod wins in 21 hours 12 minutes 04 seconds
Unbelievable!! After lying in 2nd place from Courmayeur, Christophe JAQUEROD passed race leader and 2004 winner Vincent DELEBARRE just before Argentiere with 10km to go.
Only the first five runners made it inside 24 hours.

Franck BARBIER was the highest placed runner from Defi de l'Oisans 2005, finishing in joint 24th place together with Elizabeth Hawker from England who was 1st lady. Franck was closely followed by Simone Kayser and Marc Kayser from Defi 2004 who ran together and finished in joint 28th position. Simone was first FV50 and 2nd lady overall.
Other Defi de l'Oisans folk to finish the race were Louis Flohic and Noel Vandenbussche.
Bruno Poirier co-ordinator of Everest Sky Race 2005 had a good run to finish 37th.
Magali Juneval from Everest Sky Race 2005 was 2nd senior lady in 110th place.

Notable abandonments include Dawa Dachhiri SHERPA, Benoit LAVAL and Christophe LE SAUX. Dawa was in 3rd place when he stopped at Courmayeur after 72km. Christophe also stopped at Courmayeur whilst in 27th place. Benoit packed it in after only 44km at Les Chapieux.
American ultrarunner extraordinaire Dean KARNAZES chucked it at Champex after 119km.

Croftamie Handicap

The famous Westies Croftamie Handicap race was last night. David Riach won in 48:19, followed by myself in 49:19, and Steffen 3rd in 49:58, who I just passed with 800m to go. Alice Scriven won the ladies' race in 53:31.

French athlete Corinne Favre won the women's race by 16 seconds in 4h31'20'' thereby taking the lead in the Skyrunner World Series with 4 wins out of 4 races completed. Rob Jebb still leads the men's rankings but will have to race at Mount Kinabalu to guarantee winning the series.

Fantastic weather for Lomonds of Fife hill race. Warm, sunny and thankfully clouded over a bit just before the start. Dave Rodgers ran away with the race although Stewart Whitlie made a spirited effort at catching him on the run back. Lars Ottemoller was well up the field but dropped out for some reason. Manny Gorman had a great run and was only narrowly beaten by Adrian Davis who finished 3rd.

Ailsa Craig

Got sunburnt yesterday going to Ailsa Craig. Hamish Brown had chartered the 32ft MFV Glorious for 12 of us to visit the island. Three hours ashore gave us plenty of time to climb hill and laze around in the sun. Very impressive number of gannets on the west side of the island. Here are a few photos I took.
